Who We Are
Funeral Consumers Alliance of South Dakota (FCASD) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, all-volunteer organization dedicated to helping members have the kind of memorial service or funeral they desire, at an affordable price.
We do this by educating consumers and by promoting and protecting their rights in the planning and purchasing of funeral and memorial arrangements.
FCASD received its non-profit Certificate of Incorporation from the South Dakota Secretary of State in December 2010 and functions as a tax-exempt corporation. We are one of about 120 similar affiliates of the national Funeral Consumers Alliance (www.funerals.org) that are scattered around the nation.
Our Goal
Our goal at FCASD is to help people plan ahead. None of us like to think about death. We want to make it easier for people to inform their loved ones about what they want done with their body after death.
It is said that "funerals are for the living," but, too often, the living get caught up in the emotion of the moment and end up spending far more than the deceased would have wanted, often $10,000 or more between the moment of death and the time when the deceased's monument is set.
This results in significant financial hardship for some families. Families, whether economically strapped or not, often look back and wonder if their loved one would have really wanted such a lavish display.
Planning ahead doesn't mean going to a funeral home and purchasing a pre-need package. There are too many pitfalls there. Ideally, planning ahead means sitting down with one's spouse, children, and significant others and talking to them about how they want to be treated after we die.
It means writing down a set of instructions for your loved ones. These instructions can be as simple as "I wish to be cremated," but the more detailed the instructions, the easier it will be for all after you die. FCASD can help you put your thoughts in writing with The Plan Ahead Kit.
